Direct Lobbying Transparency
Overall Assessment Comment Score
Comprehensive DuPont de Nemours, Inc. provides a thorough picture of its climate-policy lobbying. It names several concrete measures it has worked on, including energy-efficiency legislation sponsored by Senators Portman and Shaheen, the clean-energy tax incentives in the 2022 Budget Reconciliation/Inflation Reduction Act, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s proposed climate-disclosure rules, and the federal Renewable Fuel Standard. The company also discloses how it lobbies and whom it targets: it reports “meetings with members of Congress” in support of clean-energy tax incentives, describes submitting comments and holding “meetings with SEC officials” during the climate-disclosure rule-making, and notes ongoing engagement with “the White House, EPA, USDA, DOE, and Congress” as well as indirect work through industry groups such as the American Chemistry Council and the European Chemical Industry Council. Finally, DuPont is explicit about the outcomes it pursues—“advocat[ing] for clean energy tax incentives,” “publicly support[ing] a price on carbon,” opposing mandatory Scope 3 reporting timelines in the SEC proposal, and seeking to preserve the Renewable Fuel Standard and maximize biofuel volumes. Together these disclosures demonstrate a high level of transparency about the policies addressed, the lobbying channels employed, and the specific results the company aims to achieve. 4
Lobbying Governance
Overall Assessment Comment Score
Moderate DuPont de Nemours, Inc. has established a clear governance process to align its direct and indirect lobbying with its climate change strategy, combining Board-level oversight and cross-functional engagement mechanisms. The Boards Environment, Health, Safety & Sustainability Committee oversees and advises the Board on the Companys sustainability strategy, including the Companys sustainability goals and actions, public policy management, advocacy priorities, community impact contributions, climate action, corporate reputation management, and other emerging issues, and reviews the Companys Sustainability Report, sustainability policy positions, strategy regarding political engagement and corporate social responsibility initiatives, receiving reports from the Chief Technology & Sustainability Officer and/or the Chief Operations & Engineering Officer on climate-related matters bi-annually, or on a more frequent basis. On the operational level, DuPont assure[s] consistency between our engagement activities with policy makers and trade associations and our climate change strategy through scheduled weekly meetings between members of our Government Affairs, Public Affairs, and Sustainability teams, which enable awareness of engagement activities and understanding of climate change strategy, with agenda items such as proposed mandatory climate disclosures by the SEC. These structures demonstrate oversight, defined processes, and named responsible bodies, public commitment to align their engagement activities with the goals of the Paris Agreement. However, while it has disclosed to CDP that its climate lobbying positions are aligned with two trade associations, the American Chemistry Council and the European Chemical Industry Council (CEFIC), there is no disclosed specific criterion for evaluating and for action when its trade associations conflict with its climate policy. It has also not published a lobbying review or audit that would address this. 2
