Collaborating with others to advance our goals
We believe change is accelerated through precompetitive collaboration. That's why we work within our industry, across sectors and with governments and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) to build initiatives and advocate for policies that help mitigate climate change.
Examples of our work include: helping found Transform to Net Zero, a cross-sector initiative to accelerate the transition to a net zero global economy; joining 330 companies in 2020 to call on the U.S. Congress to include long-term climate solutions in future economic recovery plans; supporting the Fashion Industry Charter for Climate Action; helping to launch the Asia Clean Energy Coalition to align policy advocacy efforts in support of clean energy deployment across the Asia-Pacific region; and our continued collaboration with the USAID Vietnam Low Emission Energy Program (V-LEEP) to assist with advocating for policy supporting the Vietnamese Government's renewable energy Direct Power Purchase Agreement (DPPA) pilot.

Describe the process(es) your organization has in place to ensure that your engagement activities are consistent with your overall climate change strategy[…]NIKE is sharpening its policy advocacy efforts to open up renewable energy procurement opportunities in our key sourcing markets. We strive to progress our internal commitments on climate change and emissions reduction while influencing other businesses to make similar commitments.
For example, at COP26, NIKE executives met with government officials and signaled our strong desire for competitive clean energy market solutions through participation in the U.S. Department of State Clean Energy Demand Initiative. Also at COP26, NIKE helped to launch USAID's Corporate Clean Energy Alliance, a coalition of businesses committed to working with governments across Southeast Asia to facilitate the rapid deployment of clean energy. In addition, Nike signed on to the Fashion Industry Charter for Climate Action, a commitment under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. Nike joined UN Climate Change and global brands, retailers and suppliers in accelerating some of the industry's most aggressive climate targets yet – including a 30 percent reduction in aggregate greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and a vision to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
NIKE has continued to collaborate with the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Vietnam Low Emission Energy Program (V-LEEP) to support the Vietnamese Government's renewable energy direct power purchase agreement (DPPA) pilot being launched jointly by USAID, the Vietnam Ministry of Industry and Trade, and the Electricity Regulatory Authority of Vietnam. In FY21, we assisted several Vietnam suppliers in preparing for the DPPA pilot application, anticipated to open in FY22. Through the pilot, NIKE may be able to secure renewable electricity for nearly 100% of our owned and operated spaces in Vietnam, and suppliers will be able to power nearly 40% of NIKE's manufacturing load in Vietnam with renewable energy. We have also joined organizations that push us and other members on certain climate policies and initiatives. As members of the BICEP, We Mean Business coalitions and as NIKE, we are actively encouraging comprehensive climate-related legislation. As part of NIKE's target to reach 100% renewable energy in owned and operated facilities by FY25, we joined RE100, a global initiative led by The Climate Group in partnership with CDP, designed to engage, support and showcase influential businesses making similar commitments.

Describe the process(es) your organization has in place to ensure that your external engagement activities are consistent with your climate commitments and/or climate transition plan?[…]NIKE is sharpening its policy advocacy efforts to open up renewable energy procurement opportunities in our key sourcing markets. We strive to progress our internal commitments on climate change and emissions reduction while influencing other businesses to make similar commitments. Although the launch of the DPPA pilot continues to be delayed, NIKE has actively engaged with the Vietnamese government to show multinational business support for the finalization of the program. Through the pilot, NIKE may be able to secure renewable electricity for nearly 100% of our owned and operated spaces in Vietnam, and suppliers will be able to power nearly 40% of NIKE's manufacturing load in Vietnam with renewable energy. Along with a dozen other multinational companies, NIKE supported the launch of the ACEC in FY22. The coalition seeks to align the world's leading cleaner energy buyers, project developers and financiers to help policymakers, utilities and energy regulators innovate and deploy cost effective cleaner technologies across the Asia-Pacific region. Through ACEC, NIKE representatives sat down with Indonesia's national utility at the B20 in Bali in November 2022 to share our priorities on corporate renewable electricity procurement in Indonesia. NIKE also supports the U.S. State Department's Clean Energy Demand Initiative (CEDI), which encourages countries and companies to work together to advance shared clean energy goals by leveraging corporate clean energy commitments. NIKE signed letters of intent to procure renewable electricity in key sourcing countries and has engaged with CEDI leaders to highlight policy issues we would like to see raised with government officials. As members of the BICEP and as NIKE, we are encouraging comprehensive climate-related legislation. As part of NIKE's target to reach 100% renewable energy in owned and operated facilities by FY25, we joined RE100, a global initiative led by The Climate Group in partnership with CDP, designed to engage, support and showcase influential businesses making similar commitments.
