Through our 2020 U.S. Political Contributions and Related Activity Report, we seek to provide transparency into the company's advocacy activities, including political contributions through UnitedHealth Group's bipartisan Political Action Committee – the UnitedHealth Group PAC – which is funded by voluntary contributions from approximately 1,100 employees. These activities are reviewed by legal counsel in addition to the Public Policy Strategies and Responsibility Committee and are included in the total annual fiscal budget, which is subject to the approval and oversight of our Board of Directors. UnitedHealth Group made no independent expenditures in 2020. All UnitedHealth Group PAC and corporate political contributions are made in accordance with applicable election laws. Political contributions are part of our efforts to advance solutions intended to ensure all people have access to high-quality, affordable health care. Our Political Action Committee is managed by a long-established governance process, which includes thorough review and approval of each contribution, and public disclosure of contributions in accordance with our political contributions policy, including publishing semi-annual political contribution reports on our website.

Our board's Governance Committee, which oversees our overall strategy on ESG policies and practices, has oversight of our advocacy and lobbying processes and activities, including key trade association and coalition memberships, as well as for the review of political contributions made by the company and its Political Action Committee.

UnitedHealth Group has a long-standing commitment to sustainability supported by our senior leaders and Board of Directors.

Our Board of Directors — including its four committees — provides formal oversight and strategic direction for our environmental, social and governance (ESG) agenda, including review and approval of key sustainability priorities, policies, performance and annual reports.

Our Governance Committee oversees overall strategy of the company's ESG policies and practices, including overseeing the process of identifying key ESG topics, ensuring appropriate board or committee oversight of key ESG topics, and reviewing the company's ESG and sustainability reports. The CEO and executive team, including the chief sustainability officer, functions as a decision-making body, approving sustainability priorities, policies and practices, and monitoring performance. The CSO is accountable for ESG initiatives and performance and provides regular updates to the CEO and the board.

In 2022, we established an ESG Steering Committee, a cross-enterprise group chaired by the CSO and composed of key business and functional leaders. The ESG Steering Committee serves in an advisory role regarding ESG strategy and objectives, supports execution and results, and disseminates information.

Sustainability working groups have a special focus on specific ESG focus areas, with representation across business and functional areas.
