Kobe Steel Ltd
- Board oversight
- Paris Agreement alignment
Kobe Steel Ltd has established a governance framework that integrates oversight of both direct and indirect policy engagements under its Sustainability Management Committee, ensuring alignment with its corporate philosophy and ESG policies. For example, "all members of the Group shall report" any activities "that may influence the national government, local governments, industry associations, etc." to the committee in advance, and the committee "shall confirm whether such activities are consistent with the Group Corporate Philosophy and ESG policies" before reporting to the Executive Council and Board of Directors based on their importance. The company further commits to influence industry bodies by stating that if an association's efforts diverge from its ESG stance, "Kobe Steel shall put forward its opinions to industry associations/groups and work to ensure that their initiatives are consistent with its policies." Additionally, Kobe Steel confirms its engagement aligns with the goals of the Paris Agreement. While this framework clearly defines reporting procedures, responsible bodies, and alignment mechanisms for both government and association lobbying, we found no evidence of a dedicated, publicly available climate-lobbying audit or a third-party review explicitly assessing the alignment of its lobbying activities.
This assessment is part of the Lobbying Governance Index, covering 8,500 companies scored on whether they have processes to oversee their climate lobbying. See all companies in Asia-Pacific or all companies in Japan.
